Young animals can dehydrate within hours – waiting is the most dangerous option.

In short

In cases of acute diarrhea without warning signs, gentle stomach care, easily digestible food, and fluids are helpful. Probiotics can shorten the duration somewhat – this has been thoroughly researched. The old rule of fasting a dog for 24 hours is now considered outdated. None of this applies to puppies, blood in the stool, or lethargy: in these cases, go to the vet immediately.

FirstWhen waiting is wrong

An adult, lively dog with one instance of soft stool is completely different from an apathetic puppy.

Acute diarrhea is common in dogs and in most cases harmless – often resulting from ingestion, a sudden change in diet, or stress. It typically improves within one to three days.

The exceptions are important enough to know by heart. In puppies and kittens, diarrhea leads to dehydration and hypoglycemia within hours. Blood in the stool, black, tarry stool, or bloody vomit indicates bleeding in the gastrointestinal tract. A bloated, hard, painful abdomen in a large dog could be gastric torsion—a life-or-death emergency requiring immediate attention.

And there's a different rule for cats: A cat that barely eats for two days risks hepatic lipidosis, a serious liver disease. Loss of appetite in cats is never just a lack of appetite.

In the dogWhat actually helps with acute diarrhea

Fasting is outdated. For a long time, the rule was to fast a dog with diarrhea for 24 hours. This practice has largely been abandoned in small animal medicine: Intestinal cells obtain a significant portion of their nutrition directly from the intestinal contents, and prolonged fasting tends to delay the recovery of the intestinal lining. Today, it is generally recommended to offer small amounts of easily digestible food early on. Fasting is dangerous for puppies anyway.

Easily digestible means low in fat and simple. Boiled chicken with rice or potatoes is a classic, served in small portions throughout the day. This is fine as a temporary solution for a few days, but it would be unbalanced as a long-term diet.

Liquid is the key. Diarrhea causes a loss of water and electrolytes. Water must be constantly available; if the animal doesn't drink or vomits everything up, it needs to be taken to the vet because an IV infusion will be necessary.

And don't forget parasites. Giardia is a common cause of persistent, mucus-filled diarrhea in young dogs. This can only be detected through a stool examination – ideally a pooled sample collected over three days.

In the case of the catHairballs, stress, and the sight of the toilet

Two things are unique to cats. The first is... hairballsSwallowed hair accumulates in the stomach during grooming and is usually regurgitated. Frequent gagging, constipation, or vomiting can be related to this. Regular brushing is the most effective and cheapest solution, especially for long-haired cats and during shedding season. Cat grass helps with the passage of hair and also keeps the cat away from houseplants.

The second one is stress. Cats react to changes in their territory with their digestive tract and bladder: moving house, a new pet, rearranging furniture, conflicts at the food bowl. Anyone who notices digestive problems should therefore also check the litter box situation – rule of thumb: one litter box per cat plus one in quiet locations, away from food and water.

And another practical tip: The litter box is the best diagnostic tool in the home. Amount, frequency, consistency, blood – noting this for a few days provides the vet with more information than any description from memory. For cats that are allowed outdoors, it's worthwhile keeping them indoors for a few days for this purpose.

AdditionsWhat one can give – and what it brings

Probiotics

living culturesProperly booked

For acute diarrhea in dogs, there are useful studies: Certain strains, including Enterococcus faecium In controlled studies, SF68 shortened the duration of diarrhea by about one day. Positive results have also been observed in cases of stress-related diarrhea – for example, in animal shelters or after a move.

It is important that these are veterinary preparations: the strains that have been studied in humans are not the same, and yogurt is not a substitute - many adult dogs and almost all cats have difficulty digesting lactose.

Pumpkin and soluble fiber

also psyllium husksTried and tested in practice

A spoonful of pumpkin puree – unseasoned, not the pie filling – is a common home remedy. Soluble fiber binds water and can help form stools; therefore, it helps with both soft and hard stools.

The research on this is limited, but experience is extensive, and it can't hurt in small amounts. Important: start slowly and always drink plenty of water, otherwise the opposite will happen.

Healing clay, charcoal, electrolytes

the home medicine cabinetSubject to change

Activated charcoal can be useful in certain cases of poisoning - but only under veterinary advice, because it also binds medications and can enter the lungs of dazed animals.

Electrolyte solutions for animals can be helpful in mild cases; human sports drinks are unsuitable because their sugar and salt content is incorrect. If an IV infusion is necessary, no oral solution can replace it.

PracticeThe rules for a calm gut

Rule

Why

Transition takes 7–10 days

The most common avoidable trigger of all.
