The name comes from the Greek word chloros, meaning green, with a diminutive suffix. The tiny freshwater alga was first described by the Dutchman Martinus Beijerinck in 1890.
Nobel Prize-winning algae
Melvin Calvin used Chlorella to decipher how plants fix carbon; he received the Nobel Prize for this in 1961. A market for it developed in Japan starting in the 1960s.

The cell wall question: Chlorella is surrounded by a tough cellulose wall that the human intestine cannot break down. If "broken cell wall" is not stated on the label, the algae pass through the body largely undigested; in that case, only the price was genuine.

How it is taken
