The ritual

Cold-pressed jojoba oil (Simmondsia chinensis), actually a liquid wax, for face, body and hair.

At a glance

  • Plant: Simmondsia chinensis (Jojoba shrub), desert plant
  • Origin: Mexico, Argentina, Israel, USA
  • Includes: Wax esters, which closely resemble skin sebum, vitamin E, provitamin A
  • Tradition: Used by the indigenous peoples of North America for skin and hair, today a base oil of natural cosmetics
Why your body is aware of this issue: Jojoba oil is chemically not an oil, but a wax, and that's precisely what makes it so special: It's so similar to the skin's own sebum that the skin accepts it as its own. It doesn't clog pores, doesn't go rancid, and is suitable for oily skin as well as dry skin.

Folk medicine, tradition, research

What the indigenous people of North America used jojoba for, why the wax is so similar to skin, and what has been proven.

Here's how to use it

Use it neat as a facial treatment (two to three drops are sufficient), as a makeup remover, as a base for essential oils in massages (one to two percent essential oil), on the ends of your hair, or on your scalp for dandruff. It has an almost unlimited shelf life when stored in the dark.

Good to know

  • For external use only; jojoba oil is not suitable for consumption.
  • If you are prone to acne, test it on a small area first, even if it is considered non-comedogenic.
  • Always dilute essential oils in jojoba oil, never apply them undiluted to the skin.

As always, remember: a skincare oil is for care, not medicine. If skin problems don't improve, consult a doctor.
