Was die Tradition über das Teebaumöl erzählt

Cooks Seeleute

The ritual

Tropfenweise und verdünnt in einem Trägeröl pflegt es die Haut. Viele geben auch ein paar Tropfen in die Wäsche, wegen des frischen Dufts.

Essential tea tree oil (Melaleuca alternifolia) from Australia, with at least 30 percent terpinen-4-ol.

At a glance

  • Plant: Melaleuca alternifolia (Australian tea tree), myrtle family
  • Origin: New South Wales and Queensland, Australia
  • Includes: Terpinen-4-ol (main active ingredient), cineole (should be below 15 percent)
  • Tradition: A medicinal plant of the Aborigines, scientifically studied since the 1920s.
Why your body is aware of this issue: Terpinen-4-ol is the compound that gives tea tree oil its strong, medicinal scent and is valued in natural cosmetics for blemished skin. Your skin tolerates the oil well as long as it is properly diluted. The quality indicator: a high terpinen-4-ol content and a low cineole content, as cineole is irritating.

Folk medicine, tradition, research

What the Aborigines used the tea tree for, what terpinen-4-ol can do, and what current research says about it.

Here's how to use it

For spot treatment on blemishes: mix one drop with one drop of jojoba oil and dab on with a cotton swab. For larger areas, mix one to five percent in a carrier oil. Add a few drops to a foot bath or wash. Use within one year of opening, as older oil can be more irritating.

Good to know

  • Never ingest; even small amounts are toxic. Keep out of reach of children and pets.
  • Undiluted, it can irritate the skin and trigger allergies. Test on the inside of your elbow first.
  • Cats cannot tolerate tea tree oil at all: do not vaporize it in households with cats or apply it to the animal.

As always, remember: a skincare oil is for care, not medicine. If skin problems don't improve, consult a doctor.
