Was die Tradition über den Thymian erzählt

Antike Tempel

The ritual

Dried thyme herb (Thymus vulgaris), rubbed, for tea, soup and Mediterranean cuisine.

At a glance

  • Plant: Thymus vulgaris (common thyme), mint family
  • Origin: Mediterranean region, grown in Germany, Poland, Spain
  • Includes: essential oil with thymol and carvacrol, flavonoids, tannins
  • Tradition: A herb used for seasoning and incense since antiquity, and in every monastery garden during the Middle Ages.
Why your body is aware of this issue: Thymol and carvacrol give thyme its strong, warm aroma. It tolerates heat well in the kitchen and can therefore be added from the start of cooking. What folk medicine attributes to it, and what is scientifically proven, can be found in the profile in the Botanical Archive.

Good to know

  • If you have a known allergy to plants of the mint family (mint, basil, sage), test carefully.
  • Thyme essential oil is highly concentrated and not for children: stick to the herb.

As always, remember: a spice or herb is part of good food, not a medicine or medical advice. If you have any health concerns, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or are taking regular medication, it's a good idea to consult your doctor beforehand.
