Was die Tradition über das Arganöl erzählt

Marokkos Baum

The ritual

Cold-pressed argan oil (Argania spinosa) from Morocco, for skin, hair and nails.

At a glance

  • Plant: Argania spinosa (argan tree) grows only in southwestern Morocco.
  • Origin: Morocco, traditionally pressed by women's cooperatives
  • Includes: Oleic acid and linoleic acid, vitamin E, squalene, phytosterols
  • Tradition: Berber care oil for centuries, UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 1998
Why your body is aware of this issue: Your skin has its own natural oil film made up of similar building blocks to argan oil. That's why it absorbs without leaving a greasy residue, and why dry skin and brittle hair love it. Vitamin E protects the oil itself from going rancid, and your skin benefits too.

Folk medicine, tradition, research

What the Berbers have used argan oil for for centuries, what vitamin E and squalene are, and what research says about them.

Here's how to use it

Apply a few drops to damp skin after showering, to the ends of your hair, or to your cuticles. For a hair treatment, massage in a teaspoonful, leave on for an hour, then rinse out. Cosmetic argan oil is unroasted and almost odorless; the roasted culinary oil used in Moroccan cuisine is a different product.

Good to know

  • Apply only to intact skin, not to open wounds.
  • Those who react to nuts should first test argan oil on the inside of their elbow.
  • Store in a cool, dark place; once opened, use within six months.

As always, remember: a skincare oil is for care, not medicine. If skin problems don't improve, consult a doctor.
