What tradition tells us about fennel

Marathon

The ancient Greeks called it Marathon. The plain of the famous battle is said to be named after the fennel that grew there.

Karl's Gardens

Around 800, Charlemagne prescribed it in his Capitulare de villis for the gardens of his estates. It was also a standard feature in monastery gardens.

After eating

In India, a small bowl of roasted fennel seeds is often placed on the table after a meal. In Italy, it is known from the fennel salami Finocchiona.

What folk medicine used fennel for: in the Botanical Archives →

Sweet fennel, whole fruits instead of pre-chopped.

At a glance

  • Plant: Foeniculum vulgare (fennel), an umbellifer
  • Part used: the fruits, colloquially called "seeds"
  • Origin: Originally from the Mediterranean region, now also cultivated in Central and Eastern Europe
  • Quality feature: Use whole fruits instead of ground ones; otherwise the essential oil evaporates more quickly.
  • Tradition: Known as a spice and medicinal plant since ancient times, a classic ingredient in so-called "wind teas" in the family tradition.
Traditional: In family tradition, fennel seeds are the classic tea after a heavy meal, the so-called wind tea, and one of the first teas that children get to know.

What's inside

Essential oil with the main components anethole and fenchone, plus fatty oils and flavonoids. The sweet taste comes from the anethole.

How it is prepared

Lightly crush 1 teaspoon of fennel seeds to release more oil, pour over 150 ml of boiling water and let steep, covered, for 10 minutes.

Good to know

  • Caution is advised if you have a known allergy to umbellifers (for example, celery, carrot, mugwort), as cross-reactions are possible.
  • Use only products specifically labeled for baby teas; do not dose loose tea yourself.
  • Fennel tea is safe to drink in typical household quantities during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

As always, herbal tea is a beverage to be enjoyed, not a substitute for good food or medical advice. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have children, pre-existing medical conditions, or are taking regular medication, it's advisable to consult your doctor.
