Isabgol
In India it's called Isabgol, after Persian words for horse's ear, because of the shape of the seeds. To us, the small, shiny seeds were more reminiscent of fleas.
Cool and heavy
In Ayurveda, isabgol is considered cooling, heavy, and mucousy. The majority of the world's harvest now comes from the Indian state of Gujarat.
The ritual
Stir a teaspoon of husks into a large glass of water and drink immediately before it gels. In gluten-free cooking, it helps to bind bread dough.

What's inside
Over 80% % soluble dietary fiber, essentially Arabinoxylan, which are long-chain mucilage substances. Small amounts of protein and minerals are also present. A good product consists practically only of these, without additives, separating agents, or flavorings. The purity grade on the packaging indicates how much foreign matter from seeds and husks is still present.
How they are used
Stir one to two teaspoons into a large glass of water, drink quickly and Immediately afterwards another glass of water Drink plenty of water afterward. This isn't just a minor detail, but a crucial safety rule: Shells without sufficient liquid swell in the digestive tract and can cause blockages. If you add them to muesli or dough, you must increase the amount of liquid in the recipe accordingly. Starting with a small amount and gradually increasing it over several days is easier on the stomach than jumping straight to the full dose.
Leave at least half an hour to an hour between taking medication and taking it., because the mucilage can delay their absorption.

Good to know
- The one rule that really matters here: always take psyllium husks with plenty of fluids. Drink a large glass of water and drink enough throughout the day. Without liquid, they can clump together in the digestive tract.
- Leave approximately one hour between taking all medications.
- If you have diabetes and require insulin, keep a close medical eye on your insulin dosage, as it can change.
- Psyllium husks are not suitable for cases of narrowing in the gastrointestinal tract, difficulty swallowing, or unexplained abdominal discomfort.
- Not suitable for pets. We have our animal health section for that.
As always, dietary supplements are a supplement, not a substitute for good food and not a substitute for medical advice. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have children, pre-existing medical conditions, or are taking long-term medication, it is advisable to consult your doctor beforehand.
