False saffron
Saffron that isn't: That's what Marco Polo is said to have called the yellow root. Arab traders brought it to Europe, where it was long considered a cheap substitute for saffron.
Color of happiness
In India, haldi is considered the color of good luck. Before the wedding, a turmeric paste is applied to the bride and groom.
Golden Milk
Gently simmer turmeric with ginger, a pinch of pepper, and a little ghee in milk and drink warm in the evening. In Ayurveda, it is considered bitter and warming.

Folk medicine, tradition, research
What Ayurveda has used turmeric for for millennia, what curcumin can do and why piperine is included: the whole story in a portrait.
What's inside
An extract from the turmeric root, standardized to curcuminoids, plus piperine from black pepper. Nature Heart offers it as "Curcumin Longa+" with 225 mg of curcuminoids and 9.5 mg of piperine per capsule. Curcumin is poorly water-soluble; in its pure form, your body absorbs only trace amounts. Piperine can increase absorption many times over, which is why the two are listed together in the ingredients. A good supplement needs nothing more.
How it is taken
Take according to the package instructions with a meal containing some fat and a glass of water. Curcumin is absorbed better with fat. High-dose extracts are best taken in courses of several weeks, followed by a break. If you are taking medication, consult your doctor beforehand regarding the combination due to the piperine content; this is also mentioned under "Good to know".
Good to know
- Turmeric stains intensely. Be careful with light-colored clothing and work surfaces.
- The black pepper in the extract improves absorption, including that of medications. Therefore, if you are taking long-term medication or anticoagulants, consult your doctor beforehand.
- It is best to take high-dose curcumin extracts in cycles rather than continuously. In rare cases, they have been associated with altered liver function.
- Turmeric extract is not suitable for people with gallstones or blocked bile ducts.
- During pregnancy and breastfeeding, stick to the usual kitchen quantity and avoid high-dose extracts.
As always, dietary supplements are a supplement, not a substitute for good food and not a substitute for medical advice. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have children, pre-existing medical conditions, or are taking long-term medication, it is advisable to consult your doctor beforehand.
