English Crossroads
It is a hybrid of water mint and spearmint. It was first described in England at the end of the 17th century.
The nymph Minthe
Greek myth tells of the nymph Minthe, who was transformed into a fragrant plant. Mint gets its name from her.
The ritual
Pour hot water over a few leaves and let it steep briefly: as tea after meals or ice-cold with lemon in summer.

Folk medicine, tradition, research
What peppermint has stood for in every home medicine cabinet since the 18th century, what menthol can do, and what is proven.
What's inside
Essential oil with a high menthol content (typically 30 to 55% of the oil), plus tannins, especially rosmarinic acid, and flavonoids. The menthol is also responsible for the cooling sensation in the mouth.
How it is prepared
Pour 150 ml of boiling water over 1 to 2 teaspoons of dried leaves and let it steep, covered, for 5 to 10 minutes. Steep for a shorter time for a milder aroma, and a little longer for more freshness.
Good to know
- In cases of heartburn or reflux, peppermint tea may actually worsen the symptoms, according to individual experience, as it can relax the lower esophageal sphincter.
- Infants and toddlers should not be given undiluted peppermint tea due to its high menthol content.
- Not for pets: cats in particular are sensitive to essential oils.
As always, herbal tea is a beverage to be enjoyed, not a substitute for good food or medical advice. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have children, pre-existing medical conditions, or are taking regular medication, it's advisable to consult your doctor.
